Sue Tompkins, Din Say Ready for the World!, 2010
Sue Tompkins has worked with text and the performance of this text since the late 1990s (both as a kind of energetic spoken-word performance and in her role as singer for the band, life without buildings (1999-2002)). Her work is characterised by the rhythm produced by the accumulation and repetition of words - it's a rhythm that is totally catchy and memorable like a song but also typified by broken words, singing (for example in her work, Coca Cola Wars, she sings lines from the Monkees, "I'm a Believer" and the Beach Boys, "God only knows what I feel about you") and by the mixing in of snippets of art historical, emotional, personal, banal and everyday information. Sue Tompkins has exhibited and performed widely in the UK and internationally and has had solo exhibitions at The Showroom, London (2007) and the Contemporary Art Museum, St Louis (2009). Forthcoming exhibitions include the British Art Show 7.
